Sneinton kicks off summer of cycling

An action-packed bike-themed day, Cycle Sneinton, has put cycling back on the agenda for many Sneinton families.

National charity Sustrans, social cycling group Sneinton Bikers and Sneinton Hub Café teamed up to turn Hermitage Square into a mini bike festival last Saturday (5th April).  Visitors to the event had the chance to get their bicycles spruced up for spring for free by the Dr Bike mobile mechanics. Bikes that have been long-neglected in sheds and garages were fixed up and fine-tuned so their owners can get back in the saddle.

Spare parts were put to good use, with artist Rosie MacLennan from Nott Art helping children to create rosettes from old inner tubes. People got to plan their future journeys thanks to personalised advice about cycling routes and public transport from the Sustrans Smarter Travel Nottingham team. And everyone who came on a bike was fuelled by a free curry from the Sneinton Hub Café.

The event was so successful it will be repeated next month on May 3rd.

Clare Collins from Sustrans was more than happy with how the event turned out:
“This has been a great event to help people get back on their bike – saving money and boosting fitness. If you missed out, make sure you join us in May, or join Sneinton Bikers. They meet regularly and are a brilliant way to find out about the great cycling you can do from your front door.”

Later in the afternoon Sneinton Bikers led cyclists old and new off on a local group ride to Colwick Hall, with the more seasoned cyclists continuing on to Stoke Bardolf. The group meets twice a month and is a fun social way to enjoy cycling.

Local feedback was also good. One participant said:
“I came down to get some lunch from the café... saw what was going on then went home and got my bike from the shed. Not used it in years. Dr Bike has fixed it up and I’m off on the bike ride. I’ve been meaning to do it for ages so it’s great to get the help I needed to get me started.”
